How is the program structured?

During the first two years, all students, regardless of previous degrees, take graduate seminars and independent studies. In the spring of their second year, students take comprehensive exams. In the fall of their third year, students participate in a special seminar in which they write their dissertation prospectus. Once the prospectus is approved, students spend the rest of their time researching and writing their dissertation, giving a dissertation presentation in their fifth year.

How long do students take to finish their degrees?

Many students take six or seven years.

What are the teaching responsibilities of students in the program?

Every student's funding packing requires them to work as Teaching Assistants for eight semesters. However, funding from fellowships and grants, and other university-approved research assistantships or training, may substitute for one or more semesters of teaching.

What are other responsibilities of graduate students?

Students are part of the department's intellectual life and are asked to attend departmental lecture series and related seminars, join and direct the student group (AHGA), and otherwise participate in events. As members of the university community, students may also join in governing bodies, advocacy and interest groups, programs for professional development, and any other activities they choose.
