Department of Art Sponsored Internships: Summer 2024
The UVA Department of Art is excited to be sponsoring a limited number of paid internship positions in Summer 2024! Internship applications are open to all rising 2nd, 3rd, and 4th year studio and art history undergraduate majors. Each internship includes a total stipend of $3000 for up to 30 hours per week of work for a duration of 8 weeks. Selected interns will be required to attend an introductory meeting on May 3 hosted by the Department of Art. Internships typically run in June and July depending on the internship location, and will conclude with short final presentations at the end of the internship.
To Apply: Students will submit applications directly to the organizations hosting internships. Applications will typically include a cover letter, resume, and letter of support from a faculty member and will be due by March 22nd, 2024 at 5PM. All applicants will be notified of decisions by April 19th.

· Please share any experience, skills, or interests that may be relevant to this internship.

International Programs / Study Abroad
Art History faculty members encourage students to study abroad. There are many options for summer, semester, or year-long study and many majors and minors take advantage of these opportunities. The Art History Department sponsors its own J-Term course in Renaissance studies in Florence and Rome. It offers two summer programs in Italy: one in Rome on Ancient and Renaissance/Baroque Rome; and another in Venice and Castel Fiorentino on photography and modern art.

Summer Abroad in Italy
This program, in conjunction with UVA’s Study Abroad Office features hands-on academic and cultural experiences. Taught by both Art History and Studio Art faculty, students complete two courses that combine photography, class lectures, and museum visits in and around Rome and Florence, Italy.
UVa in Mexico
This course is a studio art structured time of working together on a mural in Cholula, Mexico. While working collectively on a mural, this course will also focus on the history, culture, and indigeneity specific to Cholula. Learning about contemporary artists and muralists in Mexico will also be an emphasis in the course. To better understand the local complex history, the class will visit archaeological sites and museums. Contemporary galleries and museum site visits will also be an important part of the course activities with dedicated time to the City of Puebla. Guests artists from Mexico will share their knowledge and artistic practice with the class to better understand contemporary art in Mexico and Latin America.

Studio Art Programs
The J. Sanford Miller Family Arts Scholars is an enrichment program for exceptional students overseen by the chairs of the departments of Music, Drama, Studio Art, and Dance. It is an interdisciplinary arts program comprised of student researchers, creators, interpreters, collaborators and advocates actively engaged in the arts and beyond within the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Virginia. Unlike the situation found at most large research universities, Arts Scholars are part of a small group of undergraduate students who have direct access to the best resources in the arts at the University of Virginia including personal introductions to our most distinguished arts faculty.
ArtLab at Mountain Lake Biological Station >
ArtLab brings artists and scientists together to share viewpoints, observations, philosophies, and perspectives in their common quest to observe and understand the world around them. Art and science are both creative endeavors. The diversity in how artists and scientists observe the world and attempt to communicate what they see enriches and enlightens them both. The ArtLab program provides time, space, and inspiration to create, learn, and explore. It is set on a remote but comfortable Appalachian mountaintop where artists are surrounded by biological questions, answers, historical artifacts, collections, scientific activity, wildlands, and most importantly, the people who love these things. During the ArtLab program 60-90 scientists, artists, students, and their families call Mountain Lake Biological Station home. The Station has a growing art collection including work from past resident artists, long-time Station resident Lucile Walton, and John James Audubon.
