Biography

Ganiyu Jimoh is a Ph.D. candidate in the History of Art and Architecture program at the University of Virginia. His research investigates the early history of digital art in Nigeria, focusing on the pioneering artists of the 1990s who employed emerging digital tools to challenge dominant artistic discourses and reframe narratives of African modernity.
 
Also known as Jimga, he is a political cartoonist and digital artist (www.jimgatoons.com) with an extensive record of local and international exhibitions. He holds a B.A. in Graphic Design, an M.A. in Art History, and a Ph.D. in Visual Arts from the University of Lagos, where he also taught design, cartooning, and African art history at both undergraduate and graduate levels. His professional journey includes serving as a Visiting Scholar at Michigan State University (2015), National Research Foundation Postdoctoral Fellow at Rhodes University, South Africa (2019), African Studies Association Presidential Fellow (2019), and CAA-Getty International Program award recipient (2020).
 
At UVA, Jimoh is an Interdisciplinary Doctoral Fellow in Indigenous Studies. He was awarded the All-University Graduate Teaching Award (2024/2025) and is currently a Praxis Digital Humanities Fellow (2025/2026).
